Welcome to Amhara Agricultural Research Institute

ARARI is dedicated to advancing agricultural research and innovation to improve food security, sustainability, and livelihoods in the Amhara region and beyond

Message of Director General
Agriculture is the backbone of the Amhara region, contributing 54% to the economy and employing 90% of the labor force. However, the dominant subsistence farming system does not ensure food self-sufficiency. Challenges such as low input use, poor soil fertility, drought, traditional practices, limited machinery, weak infrastructure, low adoption of improved technologies, and minimal involvement of skilled professionals hinder growth. To address these, the Amhara Regional Agricultural Research Institute (ARARI) was established by Decree No. 48/1992. ARARI is mandated to generate and adapt technologies aligned with regional development goals, coordinate agricultural research, and share results with end users. It also works to strengthen research capacity and ensure problem-solving, demand-driven research. ARARI has released 173 improved crop varieties and developed technologies in livestock, soil fertility, irrigation, and pest control. It now focuses on modern, tech-based solutions to enhance food security and boost high-value crop production like sesame, soybean, mung bean, and coffee.
