Project Description

Food System Resilience Program (FSRP)

The Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (GFDRE), represented by the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), is implementing the Food System Resilience Program (FSRP) for Eastern Africa to address key food and nutrition security challenges at the national level.

The FSRP aims to improve food security and management in its production procedures in Eastern Africa, with Ethiopia as one of the focus countries. This initial program is meant to help prepare for emergency food insecurity and poverty protection measures and investments. It focuses on the country’s 10-year agricultural plan, 10 regions, and two city administrations (Addis Ababa and Diredawa) to improve the food system's resilience and its preparedness for food security.

The FSRP projects are led by the government, through the MoA, and financed by the World Bank through grants from the International Development Association (IDA). Particularly in the case of the FSRP, IDA financing comes from the national allocation to Ethiopia.

The MoA has established a FSRP Projects Implementation Unit (PIU) to manage the preparation and implementation of the projects, where technical assistance under the project management component is planned to leverage opportunities for capacity building.

The Food System Resilience Program is a government-led project designed with technical and financial support from the World Bank and other development partners. The program is under implementation through the federal government and seven regional states spread throughout the country. The regions are Oromia, Amhara, Tigray, Sidama, the South West Region, Gambella, Benishangul-Gumuz, Harari, and Dire Dawa. Its program development objective (PDO) is to increase agricultural productivity and market access for key crop and livestock products in targeted woredas with increased participation of women and youth.

In this regard, ARARI is the beneficiary of the FSRP under the subcomponent of Subcomponent 1.2, "Agricultural Technology Generation and Research System Transformation.". FSRP-ARARI has implemented several agricultural research technologies throughout the program's seven years. This means accelerating farmers' adoption of new technology, enhancing the generation and distribution of agricultural innovations, and bolstering the capacity of research systems operating in the Amhara region.
